'New Girl' Hijacks Hilfiger for New Collection

by Cherise Luter

Zooey Deschanel’s wide eyed girl next door persona has invaded the halls of Tommy Hilfiger. The ‘New Girl’ star, known for her vintage inspired looks and continued dedication to Cute Cams, teamed up with the king of yacht wear to create ‘To Tommy, From Zooey.’ The capsule collection is super cute and super different for the designer known more for cable knit than mini-dresses.

The actress and the fashion vet debuted the first promotional shots and preview sketches of their collaboration Monday. According to Hilfiger, we can all thank a vintage jumpsuit Deschanel wore to a mutual friend's cocktail party for the latest celeb/designer collaboration, reports WWD:

She was wearing this vintage jumpsuit. I complimented her on it, and she told me how she loved vintage. Somehow, the conversation went from loving vintage to possibly doing a capsule collection with her.

Lesson learned: a well placed jumpsuit can unlock many doors.

The collection is now here and, from the looks of it, Deschanel’s woman-child persona played a big part in its conception. With peek-a-boo prints, polka dots and lots of red, white, and blue, the capsule of 16 mod-inspired dresses screams Deschanel quirky. She has even coined a new term for it — modical (get it, mod and nautical). I can see Jess being adorkable in look #5 right now.

Hilfiger does admit that the collection is a bit of a departure for him, but Deschanel assures the collaboration was indeed a two way street.

Tommy and I share many of the same inspirations — old-school music, classic films and old Hollywood icons — and his guidance during the design process helped to put a really unique twist on each piece.

It's manic pixie dream girl heaven and will be available in 200 Macy’s stores by April 14 and tommy.com by April 21.
