Elizabeth Banks Joins The 'Power Rangers' Movie

by Kristie Rohwedder

Someone get Zordon and Alpha 5 on the line, because evil space witch Rita Repulsa has climbed out of her space dumpster yet again. What's the iconic villain up to this time? Oh, just making her triumphant return to the big screen. And she's enlisted the perfect actress's help. Tuesday, Elizabeth Banks tweet-announced that she will play Rita in the upcoming Power Rangers reboot (h/t E! News). Upon reading said tweet, I smiled a giant, maniacal smile that would probably give a piranha nightmares. Rita is one of my favorite villains from the ‘90s. Heck, she's one of my favorite villains ever. And Elizabeth Banks is one of my favorite actresses. I couldn't be more stoked about this news. Anyone who isn’t beyond stoked about Elizabeth Banks playing Rita Repulsa is an egg-sucking purple pinhead.

Quite frankly, I do not know if there is a performer who is more suited for this honorable role; If you toss Wyldstyle’s tough ‘tude, Effie Trinket’s flawless fashion sense, Avery Jessup’s snarkiness, some good ol' fashioned Power Ranger haterade, a heaping handful of space dumpster mayhem, and a gorgeous laugh in a pot, BAM. If that isn't an A+ Rita Repulsa recipe, then I am a purple booger.

Just go ahead and take my money, new Power Rangers movie. Take every last cent. Please.

Ugh. What a gift.

The mighty morphin' heroes of the movie will be played by Naomi Scott, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Dacre Montgomery, and RJ Cyler. The reboot is slated to hit theaters in 2017.
