The First Big Super Bowl Halftime Show Was So '90s

by Emily McClure

If you're like me, you won't be watching the Super Bowl this Sunday for the touchdowns and tackles. As any fashionista knows, the real action is all at halftime. With Beyoncé, Coldplay, and Bruno Mars rocking the Super Bowl Halftime Show this year, it's definitely going to be a fashion throw down for the ages. However, this got me thinking, what exactly did halftime show performers wear back in the day? I'm sure it was a sparkly dress or a palm tree bikini (a la Katy Perry).

In fact, up until the 1990s, most of the Super Bowl Halftime shows were performed by marching bands and drill teams. No a pop star in sight. It wasn't until 1991 that the show began to feature more popular musics groups. Wondering who played the first modern halftime show? It was no other than the beloved '90s boy band, New Kids On The Block, and trust me, their costumes were on-point (well, for the '90s, that is). Just check out their performance below!

New Kids On The Block were one of the biggest acts in music during the early '90s, and their fashion was definitely reminiscent of that. Just check out how fly their Super Bowl looks were. From oversized gold and white jackets to matching straight leg black pants, these superstars knew how to rock every '90s fashion trend. Here are four other performers who totally rocked '90s fashion during their Super Bowl Halftime performances.

1. Michael Jackson (1993)

These looks are definitely anything, but subtle. Check out that iconic gold and black jacket.

2. Diana Ross (1996)

The Queen of all divas, Diana Ross.

3. 1998 Motown Set

From Boyz II Men to Queen Latifah, this entire grouping is amazing.

4. The Blues Brothers (1997)

Still the heart of the '90s.

Weren't the '90s just perfection?
