Never Do This When Applying Lipstick

by Alexa Dragoumis

While putting on lipstick isn't rocket science, there are a couple of things that are simply no-no's when it comes to wearing it properly. That's why I'm about to talk to you about the one thing you should never do when you apply lipstick. Once I tell you what it is, you're probably going to be thinking "Seriously? It's that simple?" And yes it truly is that simple!

Here goes: you should never ever apply lipstick without exfoliating your lips first!

For starters, there's nothing worse than little flakes of dry skin sticking up on your lips, because it kind of ruins that whole smooth look we go for when we choose to wear lipstick in the first place, right? Plus, especially in the colder months when we experience very dry skin, it's probably a good idea to remove it anyway.

And just to be clear, I'm not suggesting that you go buy a pricey lip scrub to solve the problem — a simple lemon/sugar mixture is perfect formula for a DIY lip scrub. But, if you generally don't have enough time for a DIY mixture and you'd prefer to keep a lip scrub by on your bathroom counter for this purpose, there are a few options at all different price points.

So, for those of you who are looking for products like these, here are a few ideas:

1. A Classic Lip Scrub

Fresh Sugar Lip Polish, $24, Sephora

Keep this on your bathroom counter or throw it in your bag!

Try: The Soap Exchange Natural Lip Scrub, $8.99, Amazon

2. A 2-in-1 Lip Scrub

Clinique Sweet Pots Sugar Scrub & Lip Balm, $19.50, Sephora

While Pink Framboise is the perfect color for spring, Clinique brings us six shades of this handy little duo.

3. A Lip Scrub For Budget Babes

Eco Lips Lipscrub Balm in Brown Sugar, $12, Amazon

Besides the price, the best part is the brown sugar flavor!

4. A Luxurious Lip Mask

Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask, $26, Sephora

This isn't exactly a scrub, but it is an intense treatment that you can leave on your lips for ultimate hydration.

5. An On The Go Lip Exfoliator

e.l.f. Lip Exfoliator in Mint Maniac, $7, Amazon

For only three dollars, this bullet-style exfoliator makes it easy to scrub off dead skin when you're on-the-go.
