22 CDs '90s Kids Listened To On The Way To School

by Kristie Rohwedder

Were you a kid/tween/teen in the late ‘90s/early ‘00s? Did you love pop music as much as Helga G. Pataki loved Arnold? Did you commute to school? Did you listen to music on the way to and from school? Did you ever listen to CDs on the way to and from school? If your answered all five Qs with a "Totally for sure," then this is the list for you!

(If you answered any of the Qs with an "As if," I ask you this: Do you like awesome jams? Of course you do. So you might as well stick around for this list, because it is a bonafide jamfest.)

I've rounded up some of the most important late '90s/early '00s pop CDs that made the walk to school/the drive to school/the bus ride to school/the bike ride to school/the skateboard ride to school/the rollerblade ride to school/the Razor scooter ride to school better that we ever thought possible. CDs that took the school commute to the next level. Whether you crushed tunes on a Discman or on a single-disc car stereo, these pop CDs were always ready to bring the pre- and post-school music fire.

1. Space Jam OST

This CD—especially the Quad City DJ track—could turn any I-don't-want-to-go-to-school-today frown upside down.

2. Christina Aguilera's Christina Aguilera

Raise your hand if you've ever accidentally started singing along with “I Turn To You” on a crowded school bus. Come on, don't be embarrassed. Put that hand up. We've all been there!

3. Hanson's Middle of Nowhere

No CD collection is complete without it.

4. Usher's My Way

*Dances all the way home from the bus stop.*

5. No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom

Just like Cher and Dionne!

6. Coyote Ugly OST

Whether or not you were allowed to see the PG-13 movie, you definitely owned a copy of the soundtrack.

7. Now That’s What I Call Music!

In a pre-iPod Shuffle world, this compilation of hits was a gift from the music gods.

8. Aqua's Aquarium

Who hasn’t choreographed a car dance routine to “Dr. Jones," am I right?

9. The Lion King OST

“Hakuna Matata” was always an outstanding choice for math test days.

10. Mariah Carey's Daydream

*Closes eyes* *Pretends school bus is roller coaster* *Lip syncs along with "Fantasy*

11. Selena's Dreaming of You

Welp, I’m weeping.

12. All That: The Album

An essential purchase for any Nickelodeon fan.

13. Weird Al Yankovic's Bad Hair Day

A carpool classic.

14. Britney Spears's …Baby One More Time

I mean.

15. Smash Mouth's Astro Lounge

Anyone who tells you "All Star" isn't a solid pick-me-up after a long day of taking standardized exams is lying to you.

16. Monica's The Boy is Mine

Monica’s cover of “Angel of Mine": Not just for school dances!

17. TLC’s CrazySexyCool

On the bus ride home from school, you'd share your headphones with your seatmate and laugh out loud at track number 12.

18. Jewel's Pieces of You

*Plays “Foolish Games” on repeat.*

19. *NSYNCs' *NSYNC

Duh.

20. Spice Girls' Spice

Duh, part two.

21. Backstreet Boys' Backstreet’s Back

Duh, part three.

22. Destiny’s Child's The Writing’s On the Wall

Duh, part four.

*~WoWzErS~* The only thing this late '90s pop playlist is missing is a tube of Art Stuff roll-on body glitter.
