As much as it’s been good for the overall storyline of Nashville, Juliette and Avery’s crumbling marriage has been really depressing for me. I loved them as a couple — Avery really rescued Juliette from a dark place, and I thought they were a perfect pair. Unfortunately, Juliette’s addiction issues and postpartum depression really put a strain on the marriage, and Avery forced Juliette to announce their divorce. It was a long time coming — Avery just couldn’t take it anymore — but it feels like the end of a Nashville era.
Juliette is still in treatment for her postpartum depression, so we didn’t actually see her this episode. Her doctor, though, blocked Avery at every turn in his efforts to see her, saying that Juliette still needed time to heal. Avery wasn’t happy with that, obviously, but, fed up with all of the lies, he demanded that Juliette tell the world they were actually split up or he would do it himself. She did it, of course, and it was emotional! Avery cried and took off his ring, I cried and ate more of my ice cream… I can’t imagine these two actually split up. Juliette, Avery, and baby Cadence are the perfect Nashville family.
So will this divorce stick? I don’t really know. Juliette comes back really soon, and I think that she’ll go to the mat to fight for her relationship and for her family. Juliette has gone through a lot, and now that she’s recovered (or at least in recovery), Avery should realize that she’s a new person. Sure, he’s been hurt, but the Juliette that hurt him is not the Juliette that will turn up on his doorstep hoping to mend ties with him and Cadence. Forgive and forget, right? While Juliette and Avery are split up now, I hope they don’t stay that way forever.
