8 Mother's Day Activities For Adults

by Marion Bernstein

Now that you're a real life grownup, you can forego the "family-friendly" plans and treat Mom to more Mother's Day activities for adults this year. And that doesn't necessarily mean taking Mom out for bottomless brunch mimosas. (But if you do decide to go down that road, please know that you have my unwavering support.) I'm talking about treating Mom like an equal this Mother's Day — treating her like a friend. So why not give Mom a 24-hour break from responsibility, and treat her to a Mother's Day activity you can enjoy together, as grown women?

If Mom loves being active, consider signing the two of you up for a charitable 10k race. Not only will you feel good knowing your funds are going to support a noble cause like breast cancer research, but you'll also experience a shared feeling of accomplishment as you cross the finish line together. Does your mom prefer moving at a slower pace, taking in nature as she moves through life? Then plan a wilderness hike together, stopping along the way to appreciate the birds, flowers, and fresh air. If Mom would rather stay indoors and surround herself with creative energy, go ahead and purchase two tickets to The Moth StorySLAM. Who knows, she may feel inspired enough to take the stage herself.

The bottom line is, no matter what activity you decide to plan this Mother's Day, the most important thing is that you and Mom get to experience these moments together, as grownups.

1. Go Wine Tasting

If Mom loves learning about the ins and outs of winemaking, treat her to a pampered day filled with fine wines, a vineyard-side picnic, and sun-drenched relaxation. Located in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey County, California, the Hahn Family Wines' tasting room offers daily tastings of their beautifully balanced red and white wines, which include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The tasting room is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

2. See An Art Exhibition

Treat Mom to a celebration of creative energy with surprise tickets to a local art exhibition. Seattle's Chihuly Garden and Glass boasts a glasshouse, garden, and eight magnificent galleries adorned with artist Dale Chihuly's massive glass sculptures. The exhibit is open on Mother's Day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

3. Take A Hike

There's no better way to bond with Mom than by getting outside and being one with nature. Plus, this thoughtful gift is a great option when you're short on cash. Search thousands of nature trails via AmericanTrails.org to find a hiking trail closest to you.

4. Run A Race

Signing up for a charitable race provides the perfect reason to get out and get active together. Susan G. Komen's Race for the Cure starts at 8 a.m. on Mother's Day in Grant Park in downtown Chicago. The race allocates 100 percent of its net proceeds to breast cancer research, education, and treatment.

5. Attend A Food Festival

Where else can you indulge in no less than five different types of global cuisine in one sitting? Spend Mother's Day in Brooklyn, New York where Smorgasburg will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

6. Take A Historical Tour

Indulge Mom's inner history buff with a guided tour of a national historic landmark. New York City's Green-Wood Cemetery encompasses 478 acres of American history. Visitors can book walking and trolley tours through its hills, ponds, and paths, learning all about the lives of the landmark's most infamous residents, who include Leonard Bernstein, Boss Tweed, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Louis Comfort Tiffany. This Mother's Day tour will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

7. Listen To Live Storytelling

The human capacity for emotion is an amazing thing. And the human capacity for weaving emotion into an entertaining storyline for a live audience? That's nothing short of extraordinary. Share some laughs and tears with Mom at one of The Moth's live storytelling events held every month in major cities across the U.S.

8. Romp Through A Tulip Festival

Why buy Mom flowers when you can shower her with a day-long festival dedicated to flowers? Located in Ellenville, New York, Honor's Haven Resort & Spa hosts a day-long festival filled with colorful tulips and special vendors offering homemade soaps, scented soy candles, soothing massage oils, clay work, decorative paintings, and handcrafted butcher blocks. The Mother's Day festival will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
