'00s Pop Songs Still Stuck In Your Head

by Kaitlin Reilly

The year 2016 may have Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and Rihanna, but before they were blowing up the pop charts, a league of pop ladies laid the groundwork. Boy bands like *NSYNC and The Backstreet Boys may have gotten a lot of the attention during the first decade of the '00s, but the women of '00s pop are responsible for just as many hits — many of which Millennials will still freak out over if they were to hear any of these songs play on the radio. For me, my pop princess is, and always will be, Britney Spears. The success of 1999's "...Baby, One More Time" gave way to catchier, dance-ier, and even more addictive tunes that became our soundtrack of the early '00s. Spears may have been my number one girl, but there are dozens of other female pop stars who also provided tunes for us to jam to — and it's about times we give the women whose songs we can't get out of our heads a hand.

Whether you're all about Mariah Carey or prefer jamming out to a girl band like Play (seriously, where did those girls go?!) you're guaranteed to know and love all of these songs of the early '00s... possibly because they're still running through your brain.

1. "Oops I Did It Again," Britney Spears

Spears officially graduated from a bubblegum-sweet new kid on the block to a red jumpsuit-wearing princess of pop. This song, and this crazy, Mars-themed video, would become an iconic symbol of her reign.

2. "Say My Name," Destiny's Child

Before we were just saying Beyoncé's name, this Destiny's Child song was forever stuck in everyone's head.

3. "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," Play

The perfect song to sing into your hairbrush.

4. "He Loves U Not," Dream

The only thing more '00s than this song is their hair. Crimped hair was an insta-marker of coolness.

5. "Complicated," Avril Lavigne

Am I the only one who forgot that the "Complicated" video features Lavigne and her skater boys attacking a hotdog mascot for tater tots? Re-watch above.

6. "Since U Been Gone," Kelly Clarkson

The original American Idol winner had a ton of hits in the early '00s, but this was the perfect "God, I hate my ex" anthem.

7. "All For You," Janet Jackson

I still have no idea what Jackson is singing for most of this song, but the beat is just too good.

8. "Get This Party Started," Pink

This was the perfect entrance song for any social gathering in the '00s.

9. "Milkshake," Kelis

This Kelis song solidified the cheeky metaphor into the English language forever.

10. "Perfect Day," Hoku

This song was featured as the opener of Legally Blonde, so it's totally OK if you're still singing it in the shower.

11. "Beautiful," Christina Aguilera

Don't look at me.

12. "Don't Cha," The Pussycat Dolls

Does this song promote a culture of competitiveness between women? Definitely. Is it ridiculously catchy? Absolutely.

13. "Leave (Get Out)," JoJo

I know we all wished we were as fierce as JoJo was in high school.

14. "I'm Like A Bird," Nelly Furtado

A song for the free spirit in all of us.

Now, feel free to listen to these on a playlist until you officially feel transported back to the early '00s.
