Kanye's "Saint Pablo" Begs One Big Question

by Vannessa Jackson

Kanye West's Life of Pablo album is finally here. Well, it's been here for a little over a month now, but was only available on Tidal streaming service up until Friday. So, fans of the rapper can now enjoy streaming the album on all major streaming services, and even purchasing it on his website. Now that the greater world has access to the new album, there are a few songs that are getting a lot of buzz. One of which is the song "Saint Pablo" which has been gaining a lot of traction for a few reasons. After listening to it, everyone is still wondering what exactly "Saint Pablo" is about. Or maybe it's just me.

Contrary to popular belief, the song is not about his son Saint, who was born in December of last year. There are a few reasons that this song has created so much buzz. It is nearly impossible to find "Saint Pablo" on the Internet anywhere. While he debuted the song at a listening party in L.A. in February, each time it has been released on a site, it has been taken down within minutes, which only adds to the allure. While West has kept the song itself guarded, he was very open to sharing on Twitter that he wrote the song about his debt. You know, the $53 million debt that he asked Mark Zuckerberg to help pay off.

The song, which is a rousing six minutes long, makes very direct mentions of his debt, his wife, his Twitter antics, and, of course, throws enough shade to create a few more Internet feuds. Call him crazy, but West is great at what he does, and, while you would expect the song to be a six minute long rant of craziness, it's actually very well put together. It seems nowadays that his music may be the only way he knows how to get his point across in an elegant fashion. Lyrics like, "The media said it was outlandish spendin'/ The media said he's way out of control/ I just feel like I'm the only one not pretendin'/ I'm not out of control, I'm just not in their control."

Then, of course, he has to go on to compare himself to Einstein's level of genius. Regardless of the huge ego, Kanye is a very talented musician. Not many people could rap about being in that much debt and actually make it a viable song. Of course, not many people are $53 million in debt. This album may be one of his greatest yet, so let's just hope from here on out he can focus more on the music and less on the life of Kanye.
