What Would Have Been In 'I Am Legend 2'

by Alanna Bennett

I Am Legend, that post-apocalyptic sci-fi horror film starring Will Smith, may have been released seven years ago, but during the time since there have been a lot of people rather patiently waiting for a promised sequel that was rather confusing given the fate of Smith's character. Now, that I Am Legend sequel is DOA — but never fear, for screenwriter Akiva Goldsman's been talking I Am Legend 2, more specifically what would have happened if the sequel had, well, happened.

The first film was written by co-writer Mark Protosevich and Goldsman, as well as being produced by the latter and directed by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence. Now Goldsman's making the rounds for his directoral debut Winter's Tale — that's the one where Colin Ferrell woos Sybil from Downton Abbey (Jessica Brown Findlay) in early 20th Century Manhattan — and he told io9 what could have been.

First of all, he wanted to clear up that the possibility of the Legend sequel was very slim — and not exactly a sequel:

Oh no no, [there was] never a movie. I mean, we wrote a prequel [and] a sequel. We had a really interesting prequel, which was the first outbreak of the virus, during a Thanksgiving Day parade, which was awesome. We did a really interesting prequel that [took place] later. Which was right after the first… really right when the population of of humans became pretty decimated. And it was this sort of trek to Washington. Which included a dark seeker elephant that had broken out of the zoo.

It certainly sounds like an interesting sequence, at the very least. Too bad we'll never actually see it outside of our brains.
