Cruz Insults The Trans Community, Trump & Clinton

by Emily Shire

On Saturday, Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz attacked the trans community, Donald Trump, and Hillary Clinton in a single remark. "Even if Donald Trump dresses up as Hillary Clinton, he shouldn’t be using the girls’ restroom," the Texas senator said at a campaign rally in Indiana. The completely unfunny and completely offensive comment was in reference to North Carolina's anti-LGBT bathroom bill — which Trump actually criticized last week.

Speaking on NBC's The Today Show, Trump said "North Carolina did something that was very strong, and they're paying a big price, and there's a lot of problems." He added that he did not support building separate bathrooms for trans people because “that would be discriminatory, in a certain way.” While hardly a ringing endorsement of trans rights, it was a shockingly socially progressive-sounding remark compared to what we usually expect from the Republican frontrunner.

In response, Cruz has hammered Trump for not voicing full-fledged support for the North Carolina law, let alone for his offering critiques of it. At a Maryland campaign event, Cruz said, "He [Trump] thought that men should be able to go into the girls' bathrooms if they want to," adding "Grown adult men — strangers — should not be alone in a bathroom with little girls. And that's not conservative. That's not Republican or Democrat. That's basic common sense."

The Texas senator went a step further at the rally in Lebanon, Indiana and decided to throw the Democratic frontrunner into the insult mix. He set-up his "joke" with the claim he'd offer an analogy that was "real, real simple for the folks in the media who find this conversation very confusing.” Then, he dropped the unfunny, transphobic gem:

So let me make things real simple: Even if Donald Trump dresses up as Hillary Clinton, he shouldn’t be using the girls’ restroom.

From the video of the event, people broke out in smiles and cheers at this remark.

According to ABC News, Cruz added an apology for making them think of “Donald in a bright blue pantsuit.” Hilarious.
