11 Songs That Truly Made Celine Dion An Icon

by Caitlyn Callegari

If you haven't yet heard, the incomparable Celine Dion is going to receive the Icon Award at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, and I honestly can't think of anyone more deserving. Listen, my parents raised me, but I'm pretty sure Dion lent them a helping hand. I grew up on her music. I performed it in school plays, I jammed to it in the car, I heard it on TV and in the movies. She was absolutely everywhere and guess what? She still is.

Thankfully, the powers that be have taken note of her longevity. Per Just Jared, the Billboard Music Awards Executive Producer, Mark Bracco, lauded her talent and success, as well as gave some insight into her impending performance at the show. He said, "Celine Dion has a huge repertoire of monster hits and she personally chose to perform ‘The Show Must Go On’ as her ICON performance on the Billboard Music Awards. I think at this moment in her life, the song has many meanings and it’s an amazing choice."

And, oh, how right he is. Dion is resilient and is due for some positive energy. Besides, her songs transcend time and genre, and I'd be pressed to find even one person who knows of her music and doesn't love it. Here are 11 songs that helped make Celine Dion the icon that she is.

1. "It's All Coming Back To Me Now"

Is there a ballad more epic than this one? Because, if so, I haven't heard it. The theatrics, the prolificness, the passion, it's all so Celine.

2. "My Heart Will Go On"

Three words: Titanic theme song.

3. "That's The Way It Is"

I whip my hair back and forth.

4. "Because You Loved Me"

If you say you don't know all the words and the keys she sings them in, you're lying.

5. "Taking Chances"

The true test of an icon? Releasing bonafide classics decade after decade.

6. "The Power Of Love"

Excuse me while I bow down.

7. "To Love You More"

I'm not weeping, you are...

8. "A New Day Has Come"

This song balanced everything that was good about both the old and new Celine, at the time.

9. "I Drove All Night"

Girl can put out a club banger just as well as she can a love ballad.

10. "All By Myself"

A cover that she undoubtedly made her own.

11. "The Prayer," Feat. Andrea Bocelli

I was first introduced to this song in my middle school chorus class, where I had to learn both the Italian and English lyrics, you know, to drive the knife further into my heart. But still, emotional breakdowns aside, this song? There are no words.

You can't see me, but I'll be the person giving the standing ovation in front of my TV. You go, girl.
