5 Ways You're Using Dry Shampoo Wrong

Dry shampoo, an unheard of beauty product just a few years ago, is now a staple in our weekly routine. Yet, as often as we use the mane miracle worker, our hair could benefit from it so much more if we avoided common mistakes. Dr. Robert Dorin, a hair expert and restoration surgeon at True & Dorin Medical Group, walks us through our dry shampoo mishaps.

Skipping the Scalp"It should be applied directly to the roots and then briefly massaged onto the scalp to help it come in contact with the scalp oil at the roots, insuring better oil absorption." To prevent buildup in the pores, only apply a few sprays on each section of hair.

Never Brushing ThroughTo ensure that the shampoo completely dries, brush it out for two to five minutes. And don't use just any brush. "A slim hair brush with tourmaline bristles will further help work the formula into your hair," says Dorin.

OveruseDry shampoos have so many chemicals that they should be used only one day to prolong a wash. Because the product clogs the pores, it doesn't allow the hair follicle to breathe. When pores clog, they retaliate by producing more oil — exasperating the problem further.

Spraying the Top of StrandsApplying product along the top strands only dries them out. "Even if you're using an invisible formula, always lift up sections and apply to the roots," says Dorin. "This helps add volume to flat hair." Lift half of the hair up and spritz the entire length of hair from root to tip. Then release the top section, letting it fall naturally, and scrunch for added texture and volume.

Leaving White Residue Astray Many formulas — even really good ones — are prone to leave white residue on the hair after use. If blending the product into the roots doesn't help, apply a lightweight serum to the problem area. "With your blow drying on a low heat setting, run your fingers through to further work the formula into your mane." The serum will also ensure softness opposed to the dry matte texture dry shampoo creates.
