Look, it's getting hotter (and depending on your location, potentially more humid). You're probably spending more time outdoors, and you're likely more active than usual. So, what's the deal when it comes to your cleansing routine? How often should you shower in the summer?

As a general rule, people tend to shower more often than is strictly necessary. Most people shower every day, but the truth of the matter is, that's more than you need to, at least for sanitary reasons. As Dr. C. Brandon Mitchell (assistant professor of dermatology at George Washington University) told Time Magazine, "I think most people over-bathe." He goes on to explain that being overzealous with your showers can dry your skin out, mess up your body's natural protective oils, and put the balance of helpful bacteria out of whack. "Your body is naturally a well-oiled machine ... A daily shower isn’t necessary," he says — he recommends reducing showering to once or twice a week.

That said, you probably should up your shower count in the summer months — Dr. Sanjay Jain (author of Optimal Living 360) told Jezebel, that you need to take into account "your environment, your activity level, and knowing your body." After all, "humid environments ... mean you collect more dirt than dry environments and would need to shower more." Additionally, an increased activity level (and perspiration level!) also means you may need to lather up with more regularity.

Regardless of how often you decide to shower this summer, make sure to keep things gentle on your skin — if you're increasing the amount of time you spend in the shower, you want to ensure your skin doesn't take a hit. So, Dr. Jain advises to keep your water warm (as opposed to hot) to keep you skin from drying out, and pat yourself gently dry (as opposed to being rough with your toweling) in order to avoid irritation. Also, antibacterial body washes are generally to be avoided at all costs, since they further mess up your body's natural flora and fauna.

At any rate, here are a few products to help you make it through summer without overshowering.
