Jerry Falwell Just Said What?!

by Jenny Hollander

Well, what did you expect from Jerry Falwell? The man who famously said that 9/11 was "deserved" and blamed "the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians" for it — not to mention describing the Teletubby Tinky Winky as a "damaging" gay icon for children — took the stage at the RNC Thursday night. There, Falwell said, among other flat-out insane things, that his father had had a dream about meeting Chelsea Clinton and telling Clinton that the three biggest threats to America were "Osama, Obama, and your mama."

Very little that comes out of Falwell's mouth is shocking at this point. Regardless, to have an individual make a statement like that during a primetime speech at a national party's convention — a line that suggested President Obama and Hillary Clinton were just as threatening to the United States Osama Bin Laden, who was behind a terrorist attack that killed nearly 3,000 individuals — is jarring to watch.

Falwell has gained notoriety, and immense respect in some evangelical circles, in part by leading the Christian university Liberty University, which was founded by his late father. It was his father he returned to in the RNC speech.

"In the days before my father passed away in 2007," he said, "he joked with CNN that he dreamed that Chelsea Clinton had interviewed him about the three greatest threats facing this nation. He replied, those three greatest threats are Osama, Obama, and your mama."

He continued: "Well, Osama is now long, Obama has six months left in his term" — the crowd cheered — "and the only way to make America great, and one, again, is to tell Chelsea's mama, 'You're fired.'"

Yup. Somehow, this guy managed to combine a reference to The Apprentice, Donald Trump's slogan, the RNC slogan for Thursday, a comparison between the mastermind of 9/11 and our current president, and misogyny all in one.
