Snapchat Geostickers Are Here!

by Maddy Foley

The social media gods must be busy today, because they just dropped another major platform update from the heavens (or Silicon Valley, whatever): Snapchat Geostickers have arrived. Combining two fan-favorite elements of Snapchat, Geostickers are site-specific stickers that indicate when you're in "some of the biggest cities in the world," according to a blog post from Snapchat published Aug. 2. Did I put that in quotations because I'm being petty because Chicago, where I currently reside, apparently doesn't count as a big city? Yes. But more on that later.

The Geostickers update is a global release, as long as you happen to live in one of 10 very specific locations: The cities on the launch list include Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Honolulu, London, Sydney, São Paulo, Paris, and Riyadh. You can send the Geostickers in chats (as, you know, stickers), or add multiple ones to an actual Snap. The stickers are customized versions of existing sticker themes — work walrus, hungry sloth, those cute little white dogs — that, from what I've seen thus far, are delightfully tongue-in-cheek. NYC gets Pizza Rat, for example, while San Francisco gets a sheep being crushed by rising rent prices. HA.

Though I personally do not have access at this time to Geostickers, as I am but a wee Midwestern babe, the Bustle office in New York City did me a solid and sent a screenshot of them over:

I am EXTREMELY JEALOUS, but OK.

Seeing as Instagram made headlines earlier this morning with their, admittedly, very Snapchat-esque Instagram Stories announcement, it's perhaps unsurprising that Snapchat is now snapping back (HA sorry I'm really sorry) — even though it's most likely just a coincidence that both updates dropped on the same day. Either way, the upshot is that we've got a whole bunch of new toys to play with every time we decide to share a photo on social media, so go forth! Snap away! And have fun!
