Here's What Happened To JonBenet Ramsay's Parents

by Molly Freeman

In the past few years, there's been a rise in the popularity of true crime podcasts, television series, and docuseries along the lines of Serial, HBO's The Jinx, and Netflix's Making A Murderer. Now, CBS is readying to debut the docuseries, The Case Of: JonBenét Ramsey, which is focused on the murder of six-year-old pageant queen JonBenét Ramsey. As a result, the family who survived JonBenét, and the investigation surrounding the murder, has returned to the public eye, though it's long been a famously unsolved case. So, where are JonBenét Ramsey's parents, Patsy and John, now?

For those who were too young to follow the JonBenét Ramsey case as it unfolded, the six-year-old was reported missing by her parents when they discovered her gone and a ransom note left in their house, according to Fox2Now. Several hours later, JonBenét's body was found in the basement of her Boulder, Colorado home, according to Forbes. Although Patsy, John, and her brother, Burke, were investigated in connection with the murder, the family was cleared of all suspicion in 2008 by DNA testing, according to NBC News. The outlet also reported that Boulder County District Attorney Mary Lacy made a statement to the family apologizing after the fact. "To the extent that we may have contributed in any way to the public perception that you might have been involved in this crime, I am deeply sorry ... No innocent person should have to endure such an extensive trial in the court of public opinion."

John responded to being cleared with a focus on still finding his daughter's killer. "I think the people that are in charge of the investigation are focused on [the DNA evidence], and that gives me a lot of comfort," he told an NBC affiliate. "Certainly we are grateful that they acknowledged that we, based on that, certainly could not have been involved ... But the most important thing is that we now have very, very solid evidence — and that’s always been my hope, at least in the recent past — that would lead us to the killer eventually."

The case has remained unsolved, though The Case Of: JonBenét Ramsey may help to change that.

As for JonBenét's parents, as reported by CBS News, Patsy Ramsey passed away on June 24, 2006 at the age of 49 after a battle with ovarian cancer. She was buried at the St. James Episcopal Cemetery in Georgia next to her daughter. After Patsy's death, John reportedly dated Beth Holloway in 2007, the mother of missing teenager Natalee Holloway, according to People. Later, John married fashion designer Jan Rousseaux in 2011, as reported by National Enquirer. In 2004 and 2008, John ran for a seat in the House of Representatives on behalf of Michigan, according to Michigan Live.

Now, The Case Of: JonBenét Ramsey will attempt to find some answers to questions left plaguing the murder case. It remains to be seen whether the CBS docuseries will give the police investigators a break in the case, but it may help to give the public — and more importantly the surviving Ramsey family members — some closure on this unsolved murder.
