Your Parents Definitely Hated These '90s Trends
The '90s were a wonderful time, especially as a kid. Growing up, I was lucky enough to have parents who always let me wear whatever I wanted, regardless of how insane I may have looked. And since I've always been into fashion, I wore some pretty aggressive '90s trends as a kid, like that time I wore a rainbow choker necklace in my first grade yearbook photo. (It still looks fabulous and I regret nothing.)
However, just because my parents understood the importance of letting me make my own decisions, didn't mean that they necessarily enjoyed the outfits I would put together. In fact, they probably hated a lot of them and/or were embarrassed when other parents saw their child wearing fishnets as a 10-year-old. But that never stopped me. I was a stylish child and the fanny pack pictures of my youth prove it.
Chances are most parents hated a lot of the trends from the '90s, but that's OK — that's what parents do. I'm sure their parents hated what they wore in the '60s and '70s. I imagine it was a lot harder to sell your parents on a miniskirt (for the first time ever in history) than it was to sell them on Dr. Martens.
Here are seven '90s fashion trends your parents definitely hated.
1. Crop Tops

Of course parents hated your crop tops. For some reason stomachs are scandalous.
2. Chokers

I basically wear chokers every single day and definitely did the same in the '90s. I think parents were anti-choker because they seemed like a silly fad or something and therefore should not be worn in your yearbook photo. Nonsense.
3. Dr. Martens
Women's 1460 Smooth, $125, drmartens.com
...Or really anything considered grunge. They probably hated your ripped jeans and flannel too.
4. Slip Dresses
ASOS Midi Slip Dress, $40.31, asos.com
Pretty self-explanatory, but boy are they cute.
5. Fishnets
ASOS Glitter Fishnet Tights, $13, asos.com
Fishnets have a very sordid history, often being attributed to burlesque dancers back in the day, followed by punks in the '70s, goths in the '80s, and then part of the grunge movement of the '90s. But still, they were trendy. Kate Moss wore them. So that means I can wear them (my fifth grade logic).
6. Leather Pants
Plus Size Faux Leather Leggings, $12.90, forever21.com
Remember when your favorite pop stars wore leather? Yeah, that's probably why your parents hated them. I also think it's hilarious that I bought a pair of leather pants when I was probably in third grade and have been wearing leather ever since.
7. Belly Button Rings
Floral Rhinestone Belly Ring, $4.90, forever21.com
This one is also pretty obvious. Your parents definitely hated belly button rings. Like, a lot. I blame Beyonce for this one.
