How Much The New Headphones Cost

by Andi O'Rourke

One of the biggest questions that iPhone aficionados have before a new product launch is just how much everything will end up costing to get the newest gear. This year, however, the phone isn't the only product getting a major upgrade; Apple's headphones will be getting a makeover too. So, just how much do the new Apple headphones, AirPods, cost?

As expected, Apple announced that the iPhone 7 would be without a 3.5mm audio jack. That therefore leaves just the Lightning Port as the sole way to plug into the device. While forsaking the audio jack might seem like a controversial move, industry experts are already noting that the move was done with an eye towards making the device more waterproof than previous generations. Without an audio jack, users will be able to chose how they want to connect headphones to their device. The first way would be through the Lightning Port, and the second way would be via Bluetooth.

But along with the announcement of the iPhone 7 and its new design came an announcement of the new AirPods to work with the new headphone-less format. The headphones will come with the purchase of an iPhone 7, but individually they'll cost $159. According to Apple's official press release:

The new Apple-designed wireless AirPods including charging case will be available for $159 (US) from apple.com and Apple Stores beginning in late October. All iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models will include EarPods with Lightning Connector and a Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter, also sold separately at apple.com and Apple Stores, for $29 (US) and $9 (US), respectively.

So, will the iPhone 7 redesign render old headphones useless? Probably not. There is always an adapter — a less than elegant solution for the transition period between old and new technology.

For those who are eager to embrace Apple's vision of the future, snap up a pair of AirPods and start listening.
