This New 'Doctor Strange' Featurette Will Get You Hyped For The Film's Villains — VIDEO
If there's one new Marvel movie that I'm definitely stoked for, it's Doctor Strange. There are plenty of reasons why: The amazing Benedict Cumberbatch is playing the titular role, and the special effects seen in the trailer already rival Inception. Though this film won't be as full of cameos as, say, Captain America: Civil War, it will introduce us to a plethora of brand-new characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And, while I can't wait to see the Sherlock actor throw on Doctor Strange's cape, a new featurette for Doctor Strange proves that we should be equally as excited about the movie's upcoming villains — especially one portrayed by Hannibal's Mads Mikkelsen.
For those who don't know much about this upcoming superhero flick, let me fill you in. Doctor Strange — aka Stephen Strange — is one of the world's top neuroscientists, and an arrogant man obsessed with controlling life and beating death. When Strange is involved in a tragic car accident, he loses the use of his hands, and therefore his career. After spending most of his money on surgeries, Strange heads to Nepal for one last healing attempt, which is where he meets the Ancient One, a powerful sorcerer who becomes Strange's mentor in the mystic arts. Strange realizes he can use his newfound powers to help people in ways he could not as a surgeon — but, unfortunately, he'll have to contend with villains who want to use that very same power for evil.
One of those villains is Mikkelsen's Kaecilius, and the featurette gives some clarity to his motives within the Doctor Strange universe. Says producer Kevin Feige in the featurette: "We're excited about the villains in the film. These are people who become seduced by what they find on the other side [of our reality.]" Unfortunately for the entire planet, Feige states that their seduction could bring about our destruction: "They are interested in spilling the barriers between these dimensions, which would annihilate our entire universe." That might be so, but you have to admit that Mikkelsen looks pretty cool doing it:
Mikkelsen's character is just one of the villains in this upcoming movie, but he's certainly capable of bending reality a la Strange. Though Cumberbatch may be the person we show up to the theater to watch, the main antagonist in this upcoming feature might be who we're talking about when it ends.
