Do You Check Your iPhone During Sex?

by Jaleesa Jones

Smartphones aren't just interrupting church or our dinner dates. According to a recent survey by Harris Interactive, researchers found that the mobile devices have also made their way into the bedroom and are now interrupting sexy time.

Conducted on behalf of startup Jumio, the online survey asked 1,100 U.S. adults between June 13 and June 17, 2013. The results were startling: Nearly one in 10 U.S. adults who own smartphones use them during sex. Those figures double to nearly 20 percent for U.S. smartphone users between the ages of 18 and 34.

The survey did not ask respondents what they are "using" the phones for. Perhaps the Happy Playtime app is helping point men in the right direction. Or, maybe there's some BDSM app flying under the radar. However, I imagine the scenario goes more like this: bored woman furtively scrolls through her Twitter mentions to pass the time while her partner humps away.

In any case, this study reflects how addicted we have become to technology. We are literally attached to our mobile devices and crave the intermittent communication that they afford us. Ironically, in our quest to remain ever-connected, we have become so glued to the screen that we distance ourselves from what really matters: Our relationships. If this study reveals anything, it's that we need to check our dependency instead of our phones.
