Steven Avery Of 'Making A Murderer' Is Engaged & He Couldn't Be Happier

For Making A Murderer subject Steven Avery, love has bloomed in the most unlikely of places. According to The Daily Mail, The former Manitowoc County resident, who is currently imprisoned for the murder of Teresa Halbach, is engaged to legal secretary Lynn Hartman. The U.S. website reported that the couple has been dating for the past eight months — mostly through letters and phone calls — and they just recently met in person last week.

Hartman is a 53-year-old legal secretary based in Las Vegas, and she and Avery apparently initially kept the romance a secret because of online threats and comments that had claimed Hartman was pursuing Avery, also 53, for his fame, according to The Daily Mail. But right now, the couple is basking in their engaged bliss. "She’s going to be my future wife, we’ll be laughing forever," Avery told the publication. I’m happy, she treats me decent, she loves me, she's kind of spoiling me right now. I just want to be happy and enjoy my life, I think I did enough time."

Hartman is also seems overjoyed to be betrothed to Avery and be a bright spot in his otherwise complex situation. "It has been a difficult road getting to this point in our lives but we are very happy," she said. "Despite all obstacles, and Steven's wrongful conviction and incarceration, we plan to be married shortly after he is released." According to People, Avery was previously married to Lori Mathiesen, and he has been engaged twice before.

As Making A Murderer viewers know, Avery has been serving a life sentence for the past 11 years in Wisconsin's Waupun Correctional Institute for Halbach's murder. Recently, Wisconsin assistant attorney general, Thomas Fallon, requested that a hearing be scheduled for Avery, addressing the testing of evidence done after Avery's conviction.

Avery's attorney Kathleen Zellner seems glad that her client was able to find love against all odds. "Steven deserves every bit of happiness that comes his way," she told People. "He is very much in love and happy with Lynn so we are happy for them."
