People Are Throwing Hurricane Matthew Parties

by Melissa Cruz

Some people will use just about any excuse to party, and Hurricane Matthew has proven to be no exception. While the governors of the affected states have warned their residents to "evacuate, evacuate, evacuate," some have chosen to stay. And as they're staying, with likely nothing better to do, some are even throwing a Hurricane Matthew party. Though some parties were pre-planned (a few on Twitter have clarified that their regularly-scheduled birthday party has now turned into a hurricane party), others were organized just for this occasion.

And by organized, I really mean stocking up on junk food and lots and lots of alcohol. From the looks of Twitter, it seems that some of those grocery store raids were in preparation for a party. So with the Category 3 storm expected to last through the weekend, with the possibility of it circling back to hit the coasts of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas a second time, these people have decided to hunker down, grab the food and booze, and party. Because other than securing the safety of yourself and your loved ones, there really probably isn't too much else to do while you wait for the storm to pass.

Here's a look at some of the parties people have thrown in honor (or in spite) of Hurricane Matthew:

1. Hot Tub Hurricane Party

Well, you're already going to get rained on anyway, so why not enjoy the water a little?

2. Grab Your Closest Friends

Granted, this party looks pretty standard, but I'd bet they're throwing some Hurricane cocktails into the mix.

3. Hurricane Party Playlist

Because what's a party without some good music, right? This playlist includes the classics "Rock You Like a Hurricane" and "Escape" (also known as the Piña Colada Song).

4. Party For A Cause... Sort Of

At least this guy is (sort of) using it as a chance to bring in non-perishable food items. Maybe he'll donate them after the storm is over? I can only hope.

5. Bring On The Junk Food

This one has prepared for the hurricane by stocking up on Doritos and investing in the classic party game Candy Land.

6. Dinosaurs Take On The Storm

These dinosaur costumes seem to be everywhere, including the shoreline of Miami. And while they're kind of awesome, that may not be the best idea.

7. Choices, Choices...

With so many hurricane parties happening, how do you decide which one to attend? The one with the strongest walls, maybe?

8. Popping Bottles

Well, this guy looks like he's have a good time.

9. A Rooftop Party

While throwing a hurricane party on the rooftop or balcony is definitely ill-advised, having the storm miss you is a pretty good reason to celebrate.

10. Honk For The Hurricane

Boarded up windows don't usually make for a welcoming atmosphere, but this restaurant definitely made the best of it.

So with wind speeds coming in at 120 mph, party on, I guess?
