The Truth About Shaving Over Razor Burn

by Zoe Weiner

Just hearing the phrase "razor burn" is enough to send shivers running up and down your spine. And the thought of shaving over razor burn? Well, yikes. But sometimes, it just has to be done. If you're anything like me, at least, and need to get rid of your body hair as soon as it starts to grow in even slightly, you know what I'm talking about (if not, more power to ya).

As it turns out, though, there are ways to get rid of body hair in areas with razor burn that aren't so fright-inducing, and more importantly won't further damage your skin. It is possible to shave over irritated skin, as long as you do things the the right way. "If you have dry or irritated skin, make sure you prepare your skin with a specially-formulated shaving cream or gel before using a razor," says BIC Soleil's Mary-Ellen Lacasse. "With a shaving cream or gel, the shaver glides more easily over your skin, thus helping to avoid skin irritation."

Lacasse insists that it's necessary to use shaving cream or gel — not a normal soap — because it's gentler, helps lift the hair and is designed to nourish and moisturize your skin. You should spread the gel on your skin and let it sit for two minutes so you can absorb all the moisture. Here are seven moisturizing shaving creams you can use with razor burn that won't dry out your skin.
