See Rihanna In The ‘Valerian’ Trailer

by Kristie Rohwedder

Those of us who did not make the trek out to San Diego Comic-Con back in July finally can catch a glimpse of Luc Besson's upcoming space saga: On Thursday, the trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets hit the internet. And it is phenomenal. There is plenty of Fifth Element-esque sci-fi mayhem and magic, it's set to a song by arguably the greatest band to ever exist, Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan look awesome, it makes outer space look like a dream/nightmare, and so on. However, if I had to pick one issue with this otherwise exquisite video, it would be this: there is not enough Rihanna in the Valerian preview.

Over a year ago, the news broke that RiRi was cast in Besson's adaptation of the graphic novel series of the same name. Her role: an alien cabaret performer. It's safe to say I've been looking forward to this trailer (and the movie, duh) for a while. One minute and 17 seconds into the preview, the unfailingly radiant Robyn Fenty appears. And less than three seconds later, poof. She is gone. I would not go so far as to say "if you blink, you might miss her" (whose blinks last three seconds?), but it is a real quick moment.

Look, I sincerely don’t mean to sound ungrateful; not only did I enjoy every second of this clip, but I believe everything Queen RiRi gives us is a gift and should be treated as such. However, I’d be lying if I said those three fantastic seconds did not leave me clamoring for more. As much as I love that brief snippet of the "Needed Me" singer using martian sorcery to change her hair and ensemble before our eyes, I wish it was, like, 20 minutes longer. I know patience is a virtue and all that jazz (oops, wrong Fosse show), but I need more of RiRi's alien Sally Bowles gloriousness.

Wait. Does Rihanna play a martian Liza Minnelli impersonator? Because I could totally get into a RiRi cover of “Maybe This Time.”
