The Clothes Are What Make The TV Show

With the announcement of the 2013 Emmy noms, it's certainly a day all about TV. The characters in these eight shows manage to look constantly chic, no matter the situation they're in or how ridiculous their plot line gets.

'Gossip Girl'

Regardless how far Gosisp Girl steered away from reality, it never faltered on fashion. Costume designer Eric Daman can be credited for giving Serena, Blair, Chuck, and company nearly flawless sartorial looks that always managed to tie into the storyline.

'Girls'

Alright, so, you probably would never saunter around Brooklyn in a dirty t-shirt à la Hannah, or wear a sheer white dress with neon lingerie ("It's floor-length.") like Jessa, or rock a doughnut-sized bun on the side of your head like Shosh, or even wear light-wash bootcut jeans, as Marnie has been known to do. But you do have to credit Girls costume designer Rogien for nailing four distinct styles. Plus, you secretly wish you could pull of Jessa's style.

'Sex and the City'

Stylist Patricia Field made Carrie Bradshaw a fashion icon that'll live in tutu-clad infamy forever. The show is responsible for countless trends, including Manolos, floral corsages, and nameplate necklaces.

'Mad Men'

Show me someone who can watch Mad Men without wishing they could steal the costumes and I'll show you a liar. Costume designer Janie Bryant has managed to give a realistic — but still dream-worthy — depiction of '50s style.

Downton Abbey

Maybe you wouldn't be caught dead in the prim and proper Downtown Abbey costumes, but it's hard to deny how stunning those looks are. Plus, it's nice to fantasize about living in a world where gloves that go up to your elbow and elaborate hats are a requirement for living.

'Pretty Little Liars'

You tune into the ABC Family hit to find out who "A" is, but you stick around... well, to see Keegan Allen shirtless. But also for the outfits! Sure, Aria is completely ridiculous some of the (read: all of the) time, but you've gotta give girlfriend credit for having the confidence to wear thigh-high boots to high school.

'The OC'

Newport Beach: Where Chanel is appropriate prom attire, designer purses replace backpacks, and it's always a fashion show. While Gossip Girl perfectly captured east coast style, The OC nailed Southern California's more laid-back look. Summer Roberts and Marissa Cooper (RIP) always look amazing, but Seth Cohen, in his Death Cab graphic tees and plaid button-ups, stole the hearts of teen girls forever.

'Boardwalk Empire'

Call me a tenth grader who just read The Great Gatsby for the first time, but I can never get enough of 1920s style. The prohibition-era fashion in this HBO drama kills it, and will make you want to hop in a time machine.
