For the first time since the news broke in October, Mariah Carey has commented on her split from James Packer. During a Wednesday appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she didn't go into full details about why they exactly ended their engagement, but based on her brief response to Ellen DeGeneres (around the 5:20 mark in the video below) it's pretty clear that their breakup is a tough topic of conversation — and rightfully so.
DeGeneres said to Carey, "So let's talk about, if you want to and if you will, you had a highly-publicized relationship. You were engaged and you were trying on wedding dresses in the docu-series [her E! series Mariah's World]. We see the behind the scenes of that, which is pretty personal. And now, you're not together anymore." The 46-year-old singer responded, "Now it's a whole friggin' thing."
DeGeneres then asked her whether or not she is happy and how is she doing "mentally." Carey replied, "I think I'm doing well." She continued, "No, I'm actually... Everything happens for a reason. Things are the way they are."
The daytime talk show host pushed even further and asked about the rumors that Packer didn't want to be part of the docu-series, which Australian site Woman's Day reported in October and was allegedly part of the reason they broke up. "But he didn't want to be in the docu-series at all and yet he's in it, you see him," DeGeneres said. Carey then interestingly replied, "Allegedly." The Finding Dory star asked, "Allegedly he didn't want to be in it?" Carey never gave a definitive answer, but did go onto say, "It's kind of difficult to talk about at this moment. So, I'm just going to compliment you on these decorations once again because they are fabulous, and I am here, among them."
It sure doesn't seem like Carey is ready to completely open up about Packer just yet, but the breakup is still pretty fresh so that's understandable. At the time of the reports of the two going their separate ways, Bustle reached out to Carey's rep for comment, but did not receive an immediate response. An E! spokesperson did release a statement to Bustle about their breakup reading in part, "We have no comment regarding Mariah's personal relationships." Packer could not be reached for comment.
However, Carey's rep did release a statement to Entertainment Tonight about an alleged fight the two had during their September vacation in Greece reading: "The fight was not because of any cheating allegations or excessive spending by Mariah. They are trying to work it out. Right now, they’re not sure if they will stay together." ET also reported that Packer's rep said all of this is "simply untrue."
At the beginning of her interview with DeGeneres, Carey did say the following, which seems to show that she is trying to live life to the fullest. "These are... what's the word? Celebratory!" Carey said about the diamonds around her neck. After being asked what she is celebrating, Carey replied, "Life... and wearing diamonds!"
