Get Ready For A Long Winter Without 'JTV'

by Caroline Gerdes

While you're busy decking the halls and hanging stockings by the chimney with care (and travelling, and fighting crowds, and cooking for 15), you're probably not watching TV. So as the holidays approach, our favorite shows are going on winter hiatus. But once the holidays are over, we’ll be jonesing for TV to return to its regularly scheduled programming. So, when are our favorite shows coming back? When does Jane the Virgin return from its winter hiatus?

According to the trailer for Jane the Virgin’s winter premiere episode, “Chapter 52,” the series will return on Monday, Jan. 23. That’s almost two months without Jane, Xo, Alba, Rogelio, Rafael, Michael, and even Petra! The trailer teases a career change for Michael and Rogelio’s penchant for celebrity religions rearing its head again with Kabbalah. Of course, the soap opera twists and turns are sure to continue. With a hell of a cliffhanger about Rafael’s parentage and just a general bad telenovela feeling about cousin Catalina, fans have a lot on their minds as they wait for Season 3 to pick back up. So, how can we put our minds at ease? Here are seven shows to watch if you love Jane the Virgin.

1. Gilmore Girls

Multi-generational family relationships between women? Check! Equal parts drama, romance, and comedy? Check. Gilmore Girls is the perfect companion show for Jane the Virgin fans.

2. Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life

So, if you haven’t gotten into the new Gilmore Girls reboot yet, what are you waiting for? It’s Stars Hollow in 2016, and a seamless transition from the original series. Also, it’s perfect to watch over the holidays with mom.

3. Pushing Daisies

If you love the magical realism, romance, and storybook narration on Jane the Virgin, you will love the gone-to-soon ABC series, Pushing Daisies.

4. Ugly Betty

Like Jane the Virgin, Ugly Betty has colorful cinematography, telenovela curve balls, and a protagonist with a can-do attitude.

5. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

If you love when Jane’s imagination runs wild and the series’ feminist content, you’ll be into the quirky CW musical comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

6. Younger

Younger is modern TV’s answer to Sex and the City. If you’re into TV romance, strong women, and multi-generational relationships, you should check out the Darren Star series, now in its third season on TV Land.

7. Devious Maids

Another telenovela-inspired show, this Lifetime series featuring a talented cast of Latina women recently ended after four seasons.

While these shows are great options while we wait, there's no real replacement for Jane the Virgin, so Jan. 23 can't come soon enough.
