Google Throws Fundraiser For Climate-Change Denier

by Jenny Hollander

You win some, you lose some. This month, Google's sworn blind that it'll crack down on child porn (yay!)... and thrown a lavish fundraising benefit for a notorious climate-change denier (nay).

The guy in question is Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.,) known for not shutting up about his belief that climate change is a "hoax" and a "conspiracy." (He hasn't spoken out about the moon landing yet, but we're pretty sure he has some interesting thoughts on that too.) He's also the most conservative senator in the United States.

Google ignored all of the above, and charged attendees of a fundraiser for Inhofe between $250 and $2,500 to attend. In spite of the company's vow to build "a better web that is better for the environment," it also donated a cool $50,000 to the über-conservative Competitive Enterprise Institute last month. The CEI has launched a series of lawsuits attempting to discredit climate change.

Facebook also donated $25,000 to the CEI...so that's great news.

“We regularly host fundraisers for candidates, on both sides of the aisle, but that doesn't mean we endorse all of their positions," Google told the San Francisco Chronicle. "And while we disagree on climate-change policy, we share an interest with Senator Inhofe in the employees and data center we have in Oklahoma.”

Good old Inhofe has also made headlines recently for arguing that the families of Newtown victims shouldn't debate gun-control. He didn't mince his words:

See, I think it’s so unfair of the administration to hurt these families, to make them think this has something to do with them when, in fact, it doesn’t.

Who's next, Google? Donald Trump?

You can sign a petition asking Google to "not fund evil" here. So far, they've had more than 20,000 signatures.
