Jessica Chastain Had a Pretty Insane Week

by Rachel Simon

Of all the actors and filmmakers attending the Cannes Film Festival, some people are clearly having a better time than others. For every Steve Carell and Channing Tatum winning raves and sparking Oscar talk, there's a Ryan Gosling or Nicole Kidman getting booed at their movies' premieres. And then there's Jessica Chastain, whose time at the festival thus far has been so insane that it fits into its own category: complete, total domination. In the short time she's been in France, the actress, there to promote The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby , has experienced what's probably one of the craziest weeks of her life so far. A run-down:

Five months after that frustrating teaser, the full trailer for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar was released, sending the Internet into a frenzy. The film features Chastain in a supporting role, although the exact details of her part are unknown. It's assumed, though, that she's playing the adult version of star Matthew McConaughey's daughter, and in a Vulture interview mentioned below, Chastain (kind of) confirmed this, saying that "everyone knows pretty much who I’m playing."

The reason Chastain was at Cannes, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, had its premiere at the festival on Saturday. The film, a unique take on relationships that chronicles a couple's romance from end to beginning, received a ten-minute standing ovation. Producer Harvey Weinstein told his marketing team that he was planning to begin making a case for Chastain and her co-star, James MacAvoy, to get Oscar nominations, and as we all know, what Harvey Weinstein wants, Harvey Weinstein gets. Expect to hear a lot more about Rigby, as well as its two other versions, later this year.

On her amazing Facebook page (seriously, go like it, if you haven't already), Chastain posted a photo of the enormous bouquet of roses she received from Donatella Versace. The flowers were likely a thank you from the designer for Chastain's wearing of a gorgeous Versace dress on the Cannes red carpet the night before.

A crazy week wouldn't be complete without a wardrobe malfunction, right? At the premiere for Foxcatcher, Chastain nearly had a Marilyn Monroe moment when her dress flew up due to the heavy wind. Luckily, she caught it in time, and looked a lot more amused by it than she probably felt.

If you wondered why Twitter was blowing up a few days ago, it was because Nerdist.com reported that Chastain would be starring in the upcoming second season of True Detective , everyone's favorite buddy cop miniseries. The supposed casting came as fantastic news to most fans, especially those who'd hoped that the HBO series would feature at least one woman in a lead role in season two.

Wednesday, May 21

The excitement didn't last for long, however. Chastain's reps confirmed to E! News that the actress would not be starring on True Detective , despite the Internet's wishes.

Thursday, May 22

In an interview with Vulture, Chastain summed up her crazy week, talking about the experience of premiering Rigby, the little she can say about Interstellar, and the ridiculous amount of movies she has planned for the next few years. It looks this week's insanity is just a preview of what's to come for the actress, but with all that Oscar talk and Internet support it's getting her, we doubt she really minds.
