Spoiler: Daya Is A Total Bombshell In Real Life

by Kaitlin Reilly

Get ready to go back to prison this summer. Season 2 of Orange is the New Black was just released on Netflix, which means that you better start queuing up those episodes before you are seriously behind all of your friends. The surprise Netflix hit, which first launched on the platform last summer, is back for round two, and I for one could not be more excited. After a year-long hiatus we finally get to check back in with some of our favorite inmates in the Litchfield Penitentiary. One person that fans are excited to see again is Dayanara "Daya" Diaz, played by breakout actress Dascha Polanco — who just so happens to be a bombshell in real life (see below, trust me).

Last time we saw Daya, she was in a pretty tough spot. After getting pregnant with her maybe-boyfriend (and corrections officer) Bennett (Matt McGorry) Daya and Bennett hatch a plan to make corrupt Officer Mendez (better known as "Pornstache," played by Pablo Schreiber) take the fall for the pregnancy in order to keep Bennett's job secure. But before you think that Pornstache is going to be taken away in cuffs and Bennett and Daya will live happily ever after... think again. According to Entertainment Weekly's interview with Polanco, we'll have to contend with a love triangle in Season 2 — and we might wind up shipping a couple we never expected. (I'll take your word for it, Dascha, but I can't imagine living in a world where I would root for Pornstache.)

While Daya's story makes for compelling drama, Polanco herself is fascinating subject. According to her interview with HuffPost TV, Polanco auditioned for her role on Orange is the New Black just minutes after finishing up her day at nursing school — still wearing her scrubs. Polanco certainly kept herself busy in the years before Orange is the New Black blew up; according to her interview, she kept three jobs, all while managing a household of three kids.

You might recognize Polanco from a few of her other projects. Though the actress' biggest role to date is on the Netflix drama, she also had a guest spot on the CBS show Unforgettable in 2011. In 2013 she starred alongside Vanessa Hudgens and James Earl Jones in Gimme Shelter, a film about a young girl who becomes pregnant and lives in a shelter with other teens in her situation. Polanco played a pregnant, bi-polar teen named Carmel in the 2013 indie film. In an interview with HuffPost TV Polanco says of the role: "I was star struck 24/7... It was my first job! There were moments that surprised me but it was all a learning experience." Whatever it was that Polanco learned, she clearly brought it to her role on Orange is the New Black.

I'm psyched to see Polanco — and Daya — back on the small screen. Now please excuse me while I lock myself in my room to watch the entirety of Season 2.
