I love themed manicures, since they're such an in-the-know way to proclaim your allegiance to whatever pop culture tidbit you're obsessing over at the moment. It's loud enough for everyone who you want to notice your nails to notice them, but more subtle, than say, a Team Aniston T-shirt (or something more contemporary; my references are obviously stuck in a time warp circa 2005). Nail art also doesn't have the permanence of tattoos or the semi-permanence of haircuts or hair color, so you can feel free to go buck wild.
Scrolling through way too many nail-art blogs, I really wish there were more manicures based on movies and TV shows. Wouldn't an Orange Is the New Black-inspired mani be brilliant? Quick, someone come up with one (and you're welcome for the free idea). Although, I should say that there are plenty of things that are nail art but probs shouldn't be — the one based on Woody Allen's Manhattan, for one thing, seems to be created for a limited audience. If you're dying to express your love for this year's star-studded blockbusters on your nails, though, you're in luck: Here are some tutorials based on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1, The Fault in Our Stars, and more.
