What Your Chocolate Pick Says About You

by Emma Goddard

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Forrest Gump, which reminds me of a certain memory: When I was young, picking my way through an assorted box of chocolates was like a game (and a fantastically delicious one at that). Milk almonds were and still are a dead give away, but whether the piece on the top right would be filled in the center or would have a hint of coffee to it, was always up in the air.

Luckily for my cocoa-based friends, they needn’t worry about being loved because I was never biased toward a piece of chocolate… and normally ate them all.

However, for those of you who are a bit more choosey about your chocolate, losing that pamphlet that came with the box meant a scary game of sometimes suffering through the bad to find your way to the good, just like the obstacles we face in life. And as Forrest Gump once said, “My momma always said, ‘Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.’” So in honor of Forrest Gump and its 20th anniversary, here is a list of various chocolate favorites and what they say about your life.

Plain Milk Chocolate

Traditional like this chocolate choice, you’re not the type to stray too far from your comfort zone. You like to stick to what you know, kind of like that one movie rerun on TV that you always watch because you know that the final result will be good. As a plain milk chocolate person you’re much more reserved than your peers, and you need to branch out every once in a while. Otherwise you’ll always be that person who falls asleep first at sleepovers and gets your face drawn on. If you want to do something like go for that dream job or take a major step with that significant other, you’re going to need to muster up some courage.

Caramel

Caramel chocolate is creamy and delicious on the outside but is known to be extremely frustrating for its sticky quality. We’re talking caramel all up on your teeth and the roof of your mouth. The way humans feel about caramel chocolate is the way dogs feel about peanut butter. However, just like this chocolate, the person who eats it is a little bit complex. Similar to how you debate whether or not you should really go for this chocolate considering how delectable it is but how messy it is as well, you have trouble making decisions in your life and you’re somewhat fickle.

Chocolate Cherry Cordials

Classy and fun is the best way to describe a chocolate cherry cordial kind of person. You’re like the Posh Spice of chocolates, except that you’re not afraid to flash a smile every now and then. After all, you’re probably the socialite of your pals and are out and about mingling every night.

Plain Dark Chocolate

Like some of my friends who control their sweets intake by limiting themselves to a few pieces of dark chocolate each night, you’re probably one to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle. You’re crazy about new juices and various ways you can use quinoa, but don’t be afraid to go all out on a burger every now and then.

White Chocolate Truffle

A bit quirky, people find your eclectic personality somewhat charming, even though you’re probably the one suggesting a random drive to “that old, abandoned house” or a last minute trip to that shaman you heard about for some natural medicine. Basically, you’re a freak but everyone loves you for it. Your spirit animal is likely a giraffe an aye aye, or Russell Brand.

Raspberry Truffle

While you might not be skydiving or bungee jumping off a cliff anytime soon, you’re definitely the individual in your group of friends ready for adventure and a bit of an adrenaline rush. People who reach for a raspberry truffle are looking for something new in their lives and are extremely flexible when it comes to change.

Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate

As a peanut butter milk chocolate lover, you’re often known as the kind, laid back peacemaker in your life. When a complicated situation comes your way, you know exactly how to handle it with composure and poise. Let’s be real. Everyone knows that peanut butter and chocolate is a winning combination. Unless you’re allergic to peanuts.

Coconut Truffle

Not unlike your raspberry truffle friend, you have your own sense of adventure when it comes to traveling. Exotic like the coconut truffle, you’d have no trouble packing your bags at making your way across the world to hang out with wildlife in the Serengeti park or bask in the sun in Bora Bora.
