John Legend & Laverne Cox? Yes, Please

by Kadeen Griffiths

Laverne Cox is having one hell of an awesome Thursday. In the morning, Cox became the first transgender nominated for an Emmy — ever. Now, Cox is giving women everywhere another reason to be jealous of her flawless beauty and even more flawless acting as she appears in a guest spot in the music video for John Legend's "You & I (Nobody in the World)". Cox appears along with Legend's wife, Chrissy Teigen, and numerous women from numerous cultures and walks of life, because, as we all sort of guessed from "All of Me", John Legend loves each and every single one of us.

Let's be honest here. John Legend is the vocal equivalent of Ryan Gosling. Where seeing a picture of Gosling makes all of us melt into our boots and wish we were married to him, listening to a John Legend song makes us all... melt into our boots and wish we were married to him. "You & I (Nobody in the World)" is no different in that respect. It's pretty much what One Direction wishes "What Makes You Beautiful" sounded like. But where that song was kind of hypocritical and made very little sense, when "You & I (Nobody in the World)" points out that we are more beautiful than we even realize, the message actually rings true.

It gets added help from the music video, which packed as many different women into it as humanly possibly, ostensibly to illustrate that it doesn't matter what you look like or where you come from or what situation you're in — you're beautiful and unlike anyone else in the world. It would be easy to complain that if everyone in the world is special then obviously no one is, but in real life that's far from true. We're all different, each and every single one of us, and it's that uniqueness that makes us beautiful.

Cox only appears in the video for a grand total of about ten seconds, but the fact that she is filmed and treated no differently from any of the other women in the video shows exactly how far we've come and exactly what an amazing impact she has had on the media since Orange is the New Black turned her into a household name. Legend has combined a truly beautiful song with a truly beautiful message and a truly beautiful music video, because clearly we had been running out of reasons to love him. Clearly.
