Is Improv Comedy the Fountain of Youth?

by Rachel Semigran

Fans of the CW’s re-boot of the short-form improv TV series Whose Line is it Anyway will be excited to know that it has been renewed for a fourth season. Unfortunately, the news was not delivered by Wayne Brady singing it in the tune of a '90s slow jam while mildly thrusting onto a visibly uncomfortable audience member. It’s good news, nevertheless. The 24-episode fourth season will have host Aisha Tyler and players Brady, Ryan Stiles, and Colin Mochrie returning along with a series of special guests. Fingers crossed for Nashville stud and former Whose Line star Charles Esten to make an appearance or seven.

Any longtime fan of the show (be it British or American version) will know that many of its star players have been a full-time or featured cast member for as long as the show has been running. Since 1998, Brady, Stiles, and Mochrie have been bringing short form improv to American television screens and keeping audiences on their toes... and bowled over with laughter.

Maybe it's the sharpness of the wit or the super-human listening skills of improvisers that seem to make the stars of Whose Line is it Anyway look like they've sipped from the fountain of youth. Seriously. In nearly two decades, the former and current cast members and hosts haven't aged a bit. Is improv comedy the key to fewer wrinkles and grey hair? Let's investigate.
