What Hit Film Did Liam Hemsworth Almost Star In?

by Kaitlin Reilly

Liam Hemsworth may be working his way up to the A-list — with roles as the lead in the new thriller Paranoia, one side of a love triangle in the Hunger Games franchise, and Miley Cyrus' on-again-off-again fiancé — but it turns out that his big break was supposed to come sooner. According to Hemsworth on last night's Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the actor was supposed to have a role in Sylvester Stallone's action film The Expendables.

The struggling Australian actor was waiting for his big break when he got a call from Stallone offering him the role in the film. Naturally, Hemsworth celebrated what was supposed to be his breakout role with his buddies, even maybe bragging a bit too much to his friends about his skyrocket to stardom. (Or, as Hemsworth said, "I’d kind of said this [holding up middle finger] to all my friends.") And then, two weeks later, Stallone called... and told him that his part was written out of the picture. Naturally, Hemsworth was bummed and more than a little embarrassed. He said:

"Now it wasn’t going to happen. In my head ... I didn’t even care that I hadn’t got the part. I was like, ‘What am I going to tell my friends now?’ What am I going to say?'"

Luckily for Hemsworth, he impressed Stallone — enough for him to offer Hemsworth a role in the cast of the sequel, Expendables 2. And the rest, of course, is history. Watch Hemsworth's three-part interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! below!
