What It's Like To Watch The VMAs Vs. The Emmys

by Caitlyn Callegari

Late August means a few things: Summer is at its inevitable, crushing end, school is starting up again (or has already started) real soon, Pumpkin Spice lattes are crawling their way back into coffee shops, and two mysterious groups of people start handing out awards to celebrities again. Because obviously, no one's clutched anything gold since March and that's practically a crime.

But, the two mainstay award shows that take over your screens at the end of August are, as you know, vastly different. For one, they inherently cater to two different mediums, considering the Emmys are for television whereas the VMAs are for music videos. Secondly, they appeal to two completely different age groups. I think we'd all find it a little troubling to see grandpa around the television, doing shots every time Miley did something a little off collar. Similarly, your seventh grade cousin doesn't want any of that Outstanding Drama or Comedy series nonsense, either.

But, if you find yourself in that late teens to thirty-something category, you may still be struggling between which show is more apt for you to be viewing. Thankfully, the shows are on two different nights, but that doesn't mean the struggle is any easier. Because regardless, you're in for a whole lot of WTF and HUH moments no matter where the stage is set or for who.

THE PRE-SHOW/RED CARPET

VMAS:

EMMYS:

Admittedly, the VMAs are a hard act to follow controversy-wise, but Emmys, I besiege you, just a little extra spice or something.

THE MONOLOGUE:

VMAS:

EMMYS:

The Emmys always seem to elicit a hearty chuckle or two, whereas the VMAs have you on the edge of your seat. Hilarious one minute, disastrous the next.

MUSICAL PERFORMANCES:

VMAS:

EMMYS:

It's more confusion than anything, really. Like, was that really amazing? Or really, horrifically bad?

ACCEPTANCE SPEECHES:

VMAS:

Blah blah blah...

EMMYS:

...blah blah blah.

A whole lot of God thanking going on, that's for sure.

THE OCCASIONAL CAMERA PANS TO THE AUDIENCE:

VMAS:

THEN...

You never know who's trashed enough to just leave their seat and storm the stage *cough Kanye cough*

EMMYS:

Just a lot of polite smiles and folded hands. Ah, adulthood.
