Backstreet's Back, Alright! (Sort Of.)

by Mallory Schlossberg

Everybody (yeah, yeah)...rock your body (yeah, yeah)...everybody...rock your body right. Backstreet's back, all right! Well, sort of (and yes, you can publicly shame me for knowing all of the lyrics to that song) . In honor of the VMAs, The Backstreet Boys tweeted a throwback to the 1999 VMAs. Believe it or not, BSB was gracing us with "I Want It That Way" a whopping fifteen years ago, which means — yes, you're old, but it's okay, because they are, too. AJ McLean looks very, very different.

But despite AJ's foray into posting pictures on his website of skulls superimposed onto his manparts, we should all pause to remember that 1999 was a special year for pop music. In fact, dare I say it, but 1999 was the beginning of the dawn of a new era for pop music. Britney Spears released ...Baby One More Time! *NSYNC rose to popularity! Christina Aguilera's "Genie In A Bottle" came onto the air, giving tweens around the globe a new lesson in vocal riffing! And of course, the Backstreet Boys' seminal album, Millennium, hit shelves — and perhaps even more significantly, all five of the boys donned matching white outfits.

So, since the Boys (or their PR person, whatever) decided to take a couple of seconds to tweet about this critical moment in pop music history, I've decided to take it a step further and give you the Boys' actual performance from 1999.

You're welcome.
