And You Think You Have a Hard Time Dating...

by Alanna Greco

The town of Novia do Corderio, a woman-only enclave in Brazil, is unlike any place you have ever heard of. It's known for its all-female residents, most of whom are single and are renowned in the region for their beauty. The town, population 600, remains female dominated because the women only allow their sons to live there until their 18th birthdays, and their husbands are only allowed to reside in the town on weekends.

This unique set up is based upon the 1891 exiling of Maria Senhorinha de Lima, who was exiled from the Catholic Church and her home after being accused of being an adulterer. After she settled in Noiva do Cordeiro, other women who were shunned from the Church joined her and they isolated themselves from the outside world. Since then, the Noiva do Cordeiro has been committed to being a place where women are in charge and make the rules.

However, the picture-perfect town is now facing a problem; too many single women and not a suitor in sight. The women of the town have recently been trying to spread awareness of their plight to find eligible bachelors who are willing to adapt to their style of living. Resident Nelma Fernandes told the Telegraph,

I haven’t kissed a man for a long time. We all dream of falling in love and getting married. But we like living here and don’t want to have to leave the town to find a husband. We’d like to get to know men who would leave their own lives and come to be a part of ours. But first they need to agree to do what we say and live according to our rules.

This isn’t to say that the town is looking to become integrated with men. The women are proud of the community they have formed and their way life. The women take care of all matters in the town, from agriculture to town planning and policy. The absence of men hasn’t caused any problems besides an excess of single women. In fact, resident Rosalee Fernandes told the Telegraph,

There are lots of things that women do better than men. Our town is prettier, more organised, and far more harmonious than if men were in charge. When problems or disputes arise, we resolve them in a woman’s way, trying to find consensus rather than conflict.

And how great is that? A town full of women doing what they want, exactly how they want to do it, and thriving as a result. Clearly, any man who wants to join this community better be ready for an overwhelming amount of girl power and a unique change in lifestyle.

I wish these ladies good luck in finding worthy bachelors…hopefully they are as awesome as you ladies are!
