What Your Fall Vest Choice Says About You

by Alexa Tucker

You guys, let me tell you something: I love vests. They are the perfect piece for this awkward in-between-seasons weather that's now upon us. They aren't so warm that your insides are cooking when you're outside, but they're perfect for glamorously draping around your shoulders when the classroom turns a little arctic. They take you from chilly mornings to toasty afternoons, from warm cars to cold offices. Yes, vests are the unsung hero of the outerwear world.

And there are tons of vest options — denim, motorcycle, fur, puffy... so much selection, so little time. The ability to wear vests is one of the main reasons I love this not-too-hot-not-too-cold time of year. And although it might look weird if I wore a vest every day for four weeks straight, I am considering it.

Like every woman, every vest style has a personality all its own. Wearing different vests all the time would be the ultimate style chameleon move and add a whole new layer (literally and figuratively) to getting dressed in the morning. How do I feel today? Who do I want to be? Luckily, I'll have this handy dandy vest guide to go by. As will you. Happy vesting!

Denim Vest

A denim vest says that you are the girl Tom Petty was talking about in "Free Fallin'." She's a good girl, loves her mama, loves Jesus, and America too... (Even if none of those things is true, you get the vibe.)

Motorcycle Vest

If you were in a Divergent faction, you would be Dauntless. Because you are a badass. And even though your torso is toasty warm while your arms are freezing, you don't care. Because you've got your motorcycle vest on.

Tuxedo Vest

Two words: power woman. If Beyoncé had an office job, she would wear a tuxedo vest every day. And no one would fault her for it, because a) she's Beyoncé, and b) a tuxedo vest says "I am a strong professional woman who's ready to crunch some numbers in style."

Quilted Vest

Who wants to go camping?! Not me. But I applaud you brave souls. Best of luck in all of your outdoorsy endeavors — your vest is the most adventurous of them all. (If you're heading to Vail this winter, though, count me in. Because I can work a puffy vest ski lodge-style.)

Faux Fur Vest

G-L-A-M…O-R…O-U-S, yeah. (Can you tell that was supposed to sound like Glamorous by Fergie?) Faux fur vests are the epitome of fabulous. You’re confident, bold, and sassy, and you’ve got the vest to prove it.

Shearling Vest

A shearling vest is classic faux fur’s hippie cousin. Your boho style fits along perfectly with this piece. Flowy floral top, high waisted jeans and boots? You make me love fall so much.

Draped Vest

Do you find yourself wondering how all of your yoga pants are dirty already? Does the thought of dressing up for class make you not want to go at all? Then draped vests are probably your thing. The draped vest is for the girl who's casual but wants to look good, too. And as much as I love my collegiate hoodies, this style is a much better way to accessorize your go-to sport leggings.

Cargo Vest

It's safari time! (And by safari time, I mean time to watch The Real Housewives of New Jersey go at each others' throats.) Whether you're lounging at home or running errands, the cargo vest is one of the most surprisingly versatile vests in the sleeveless family. Just like you.
