This Is a Must-See, 'LOTR' Fans

by Emma Goddard

There are only two things in life that make me so happy that I want to jump up and down and scream like a little girl: Bottomless mimosas at brunch, and everything/anything related to Lord of the Rings. So, just know that I'm not kidding when I say I smiled and started clapping giddily after watching this video of Sir Ian McKellen reprising his role as Gandalf for just a moment while visiting students at the Chew Valley School in England. Trust me, it will make your heart soar.

Although McKellen was visiting the school to discuss LGBT issues for lesbian, gay, and bisexual charity Stonewall, he also used his time to encourage the school’s students to study and work hard.

In the short but wonderful video, the actor is seen asking them, “In your preparation for your examinations, if you don’t do your revision properly, do you know what will happen?” When the students respond with “What?” McKellen replies with a powerful “You shall not pass!” Just like I did right after watching the video, everyone began clapping and yelling in unison, because there’s really nothing more magical than Gandalf himself saying what is likely one of his most well-known lines from the Lord of the Rings series.

I’m sure that those children immediately ran home to their parents to tell them the exciting news, and I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them even bragged about it to their non-Chew Valley School friends. And if Gandalf’s educational advice didn't convince those kids to study, then what will?
