How Does Your College Rank In Safe Sex Awareness?

by Alanna Greco

It turns out that Trojan is a company that does more than manufacture creative condoms with names such as “Fire and Ice” and “Charged.” The condom manufacturer just released its ninth annual Trojan Sexual Health Report Card, which ranks college campuses based on how accessible they make sexual health resources and information.

For nearly a decade, Trojan has been working with Sperling's BestPlaces researchers to assess 140 college campuses to determine which schools do the most to encourage healthy sex practices. So what exactly do they look for? The factors include availability of STI testing and contraception, accessibility and hours of health centers, usability of sexual health online resources, level of overall sexual health awareness, and quality of sexual education programming.

This year’s top ranked college was Oregon State University, which jumped from number 26 in 2013 all the way to number one. According to the Huffington Post, part of what pushed the school to the top is a “Dr. Sex” column published in the school's campus newspaper, which features a faculty member in human development and family sciences who answers anonymous sex questions. Another school in the beaver state (yes, that is Oregon’s nickname), the University of Oregon, ranked number 17 because of their innovative SexPositive App, which brings information about safe sex to students’ phones.

So far, the Trojan survey has been a way to motivate schools to improve their sexual health policies. Courtney Weaver, Assistant Director of Health Promotion at Florida Atlantic University – Boca Raton told PR Newswire, “The results of the survey give us the opportunity to catch a glimpse of what other universities offer to their students, which gets us thinking about what we need to do to push our own educational practices to the next level... Taking part in this survey keeps us on our toes and thinking outside the box.”

And without further ado, here are the top five schools from this year’s survey:

1. Oregon State University

2. The University of Texas at Austin

3. University of Maryland-College Park

4. University of Arizona

5. Stanford University
