Kristen Bell’s “Text Me Merry Christmas” Is the Modern Holiday Song Even a Total Scrooge Will Love — LISTEN

Every year, various musicians take a stab at creating new holiday music or putting their spin on fan favorites, but the songs typically leave me feeling underwhelmed and reaching for old classics like The Drifters' "White Christmas" or Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas is You." Either there are very few modern holiday songs that actually hit the mark, or I'm just set in my ways and refuse to rank new songs above the ones that already have a warm, cuddly space on my holiday playlist. Who knows? However, indecisiveness was not a factor after I heard Straight No Chaser and Kristen Bell's "Text Me Merry Christmas," which contains all the elements of a classic Christmas song. The Frozen actress joined the a capella singing group for the super cute tune that puts an appropriately modern spin on holiday greetings. While exchanging holiday cards remain a kind, timeless gesture, there are a ton of folks who can relate to the mass texting sprees that accompany every holiday season. Not to mention the messaging overload that follows when someone replies back to the entire list of recipients. If the thought of that annual communication conundrum gets you all in a huff, then the song's adorable lyrics will help lighten the mood. For example, Bell sings, "Text me Merry Christmas, send a selfie too/ If you do I'll go 'neath the mistletoe and pretend my screen is you." So it's a little cheesy, but combined with a few of these holiday films streaming on Netflix, it's highly likely to cure a mild case of Scrooge-like behavior. Oh, and Mariah Carey certainly won't appreciate being compared to yet another singer, but, towards the end of the song, Bell hit this undeniably Mariah-esque high note that's pretty impressive.
