Beyoncé's "Standing on the Sun" Is a Triumph

by Alex Kritselis

Ring the alarm because it's finally official: Beyoncé's new "Standing on the Sun" remix featuring rapper Mr. Vegas is here, and it'll make you feel like you're sippin' a fancy tropical drink (the kind with a toothpick umbrella) on a private beach somewhere (...even though parts of the United States are being blanketed with snow as we speak). Yeah, the song's just that good. The "Standing on the Sun" remix is included on BEYONCÉ (Platinum Edition), the reissue of Beyoncé's 2013 self-titled album, which was released on Monday. I wasn't sure that this day would ever come, to be honest. Music fans first heard a clip of "Standing on the Sun" in an H&M commercial in April 2013, but curiously, when BEYONCÉ dropped unannounced last December, the song was nowhere to be found. Though the track has made its way online in various forms since then, this is the first time that it's been officially released by Beyoncé herself. I have to say, it feels pretty good to finally have "Standing on the Sun" in glorious high quality (even if the remix isn't quite as good as the original version).

In my humble opinion, "Standing on the Sun" is one of the best tracks that Beyoncé has ever recorded — thanks in part to brilliant songwriting and production by Sia Furler ("Chandelier") and Greg Kurstin (Kelly Clarkson's "What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)"), respectively. On the first verse and pre-chorus, Bey sings:

My body is magnified

In the sun, set me alight

My body and your delight

Burn me up, set me alight

I can't deny your desire

Feels like I'm on fire

When you touch me I feel the flame

Licking at my feet, oh

The track's triumphant chorus really turns up the temperature:

Can you feel the heat on my skin?

Can you feel all my lovin'?

You and me are standing on the sun

Can you feel my heart burnin'?

Can you feel all my good lovin'?

You and me are standing on the sun...

One thing's for sure: Your Beyoncé music collection isn't complete without "Standing on the Sun." BEYONCÉ (Platinum Edition) is available now. If you bought the album last year and don't want to buy it again, you have the option of purchasing just the new content (two new songs, four remixes, and a bunch of tour videos) on iTunes.

Happy Yoncégiving, everyone!
