Ellen Takes on 'Fifty Shades' And It's Perfect

by Allison Piwowarski

Since the movie's production was announced, there has been a lot of chatter about the Fifty Shades Of Grey casting decisions. First, who would play the two main characters Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele? After Charlie Hunnam won the role of Grey, but then quickly turned down the role, every decision has felt somewhat shaky. One person who seems to be taking advantage of the film's casting issues is Ellen DeGeneres. We know that Dakota Johnson will be Anastasia, but DeGeneres has recently come out with a Fifty Shades of Grey trailer starring herself as the "inner goddess," and it might just be better than the actual movie.

DeGeneres starts by telling her audience that she has starred in many movies before, but ultimately, her roles are always cut out of the final film. This time around though, it's different. "The Fifty Shades of Grey movie is coming out next year and I am so happy and proud to say I got the lead role," she told her studio audience, "And I am definitely going to be the lead in the movie. They're acting like it's Dakota Johnson. It's not. It's me. Because no one know knows their way around a whip more than me."

Now, I haven't seen the film yet — I'll save that for... I don't know, whenever it is socially acceptable to see Ffity Shades Of Grey — but while the trailer looks enticing, DeGeneres' version is something I would much rather see while surrounded by strangers in a dark theater, shoving my face with buckets of popcorn (and fine, I plan on getting a Slurpee, too).

DeGeneres' version features Beyoncé still — so don't worry, we still have that luxury — but it doesn't feature the Fifty Shades erotic content that readers of the books have grown to love (and also laugh at/ question "How does that work?"). DeGeneres talks more about Harry & David holiday fruit baskets, popcorn being stuck to her lip, and singing "Maneater" by Hall & Oats, which is probably the most un-Fifty Shades song ever. The best part of the trailer comes at the end, when Christian reveals his "acquired taste" in extracurriculars, and brings the 56-year-old talk show host to the red room of pain. Her reaction is probably the reaction that most of us would have upon seeing whips and chains, as she says, "Oh, hell no." So I guess Johnson will keep the part as Anastasia Steele, for now.
