While the Christmas carols that Reese Witherspoon and Jimmy Fallon sang on Tuesday's The Tonight Show episode technically sound like the Christmas carols we all know and love, I can't say that they'll really do much to get you in the holiday spirit. Not because of Witherspoon or Fallon's singing abilities or anything (because they did their best!) but, instead, because they're what Fallon calls "random phrase" Christmas carols — which means instead of lyrics like "Jingle bells/ jingle bells/ jingle all the way," we get lyrics like "Small old man/ small old man/ small old man named Tom," set to the tune of "Jingle Bells."
Like I said — not exactly something to get you in the holiday spirit.
BUT, that doesn't mean it's not worth a watch, or three: Like most The Tonight Show clips, it is hilarious, and Witherspoon's ability to sing "random phrase" Christmas carols is surprisingly good. Plus, who knows! Maybe just the familiar melodies of carols like "Silent Night" and "Jingle Bells" will get you in the Christmas spirit. The lyrics are so creative and catchy, too, that maybe we'll all just end up forgetting what the songs actually sound like and humming these versions instead.
