Benedict, Beyonce, & J. Law Won Tumblr

by Alanna Bennett

Which celebrities have won the mass throbbing heart of Tumblr is hardly ever something shrouded in mystery. In fact, Tumblr's favorite people are usually an intriguing mix of the mainstream zeitgeist's favorite people (Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence) and underrated gems just waiting to break through — or who did break through with help from Tumblr (Benedict Cumberbatch). And so it is that the list of Tumblr's 2014 favorites make up a veritable homecoming court of mainstream beloveds and those who surely by next year will be mainstream beloveds. Some on the lists wont surprise you, but some are surely telling about which generally under-the-radar fandoms are most fervent.

First, the big ones:

Homecoming King: Benedict Cumberbatch, Most Reblogged Actor

This is the second year in the row Cumberbatch has won this honor, and at this point it is probably a surprise to literally no one who has encountered Cumberbatch's name on the Internet.

The Sherlock actor, who can currently be seen in theaters playing Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, could probably just be crowned the eternal king of Tumblr at this point. His fandom is famous, and infamous, and all the other words you can commonly find surrounding Internet fandoms who make a name for themselves. Here's the actor's video message recorded in honor of his win:

Can you imagine if, somehow, Beyonce and Benedict Cumberbatch did a project together? Eat your heart out, Kim Kardashian, that would break the Internet.

Homecoming Princess: Jennifer Lawrence, most reblogged actress

Another non-surprise; Lawrence may not be at Peak BFF anymore — all celebrity BFFS go through ebbs and flows, it's natural — but between the unfortunate theft of her private photos and the release of Mockingjay, social media was in a frenzy over her as always this year.

Homecoming Princes: 5 Seconds Of Summer, Most Reblogged Band

One Direction's got more mainstream name recognition, but apparently 1D lookalikes 5SOS fans are a lot more liberal with the reblog button.

Homecoming Jam: Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda"

Between the feminist discussion/debate and Minaj's straight-up great year, it's hardly a surprise she beat Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" here, even with the Clueless homage.

Homecoming Band: Taylor Swift Singing 1989

Swift joined Tumblr this year, which definitely raised her street cred with the site. Add to that her feminist awakening and the mass success of her 1989 publicity tour in somehow making the mega-star seem even more relatable to many on the site, and you've got an album already on replay on many a blog.

You can read a whole lot more lists about who won Tumblr in 2014 over at Tumblr's Year In Review, but here are some other fascinating findings:

Chris Pratt Wasn't In the Top 10 Reblogged Actors

He was certainly one of this year's breakout performers, but he landed at 20. The top 10 are much more fringe, with a few Marvel actors thrown in for good measure. From Year In Review:

  1. Benedict Cumberbatch
  2. Tom Hiddleston
  3. Jensen Ackles
  4. Dylan O’Brien
  5. Misha Collins
  6. Jared Padalecki
  7. Chris Evans
  8. Martin Freeman
  9. Sebastian Stan
  10. Leonardo DiCaprio

Fandom still rules here.

The Women In the Top 20 Is Made Up Of Women Poised For Breakout

They've all already broken out to varying degrees and they certainly couldn't be called unsuccessful — the top ten is made up of mainly mainstream movie stars, many of whom have already broken out and then some. But a number of the top 20 reblogged actresses are women who have already made a mark but who you should definitely learn the names of, because they're just getting started. Among them: Natalie Dormer, Tatiana Maslany, Karen Gillan. Kristen Stewart and Lupita Nyong'o are also pretty beloved, as are the super mainstream staples: Amy Poehler, Meryl Streep, Angelina Jolie. Holland Roden of Teen Wolf is on there, too.

Oh, and apparently we should be paying more attention to A$AP ROCKY.
