You Gotta Watch Bill Nye Try to Dance

by Lindsay Mannering

What, no points for nostalgia? On the Season 17 premiere of Dancing With the Stars Monday night, Bill Nye the Science Guy and DWTS pro Tyne Stecklein received the worst scores of the lot. Bruno, Len, and Carrie Ann were not impressed with Nye and Stecklein's cha-cha-cha and handed down a combined score of 14 out of 30. Ouch. It's as if they didn't even care that they danced to a cover of Oingo Boingo’s “Weird Science" — the cutesy reference alone should've been worth at least a couple more points, right?

Now that Nye's at the bottom of the scoreboard, geeks, fans of geeks, and geeky fans need to hope that their votes were enough to keep their fearless leader on the show. It's been a while since '90s kids have seen Bill in action and if he's the first one cut from the show, it'd sting worse than the NASA budget cuts, or that time they overheard someone talking about how the movie Armageddon could actually happen. Shudder.

But, if Bill Nye does get the boot from the show, there's a fallback '90s icon to root for — Elizabeth Berkley, a.k.a. Jesse Spano from Saved By the Bell is on DWTS, as well. Last night she and partner Val Chmerkovskiy earned 24 points and are currently in a three-way tie for second place.

If we can't have our favorite beaker geeker, Spano will do in a pinch.
