13 Celebrities Who Don't Believe in Marriage, From Jon Hamm to Charlize Theron

When George Clooney tied the knot with the gorgeous Amal Alamuddin this year, people were buzzing about the end of one of the most legendary bachelorhoods in Hollywood. Over the years, Clooney has made some notable comments on his ideas of marriage and monogamy, telling Esquire this year, "I haven't had aspirations in that way, ever. I was married in 1989. I wasn't very good at it. I was quoted as saying I'll never get married again pretty much right after I got divorced and then I've never talked about it since."

Well, times have changed for Clooney and while I can't say which celebs might change their minds in the future, there are plenty of fellow celebs who don't believe in the institution of marriage, with many remaining unmarried for most of their lives. And guess what? They're happy about it!

Sarah Silverman

She’s happily dating actor Michael Sheen and after tabloids and rumors ran with stories that she was begging for a ring, she hit back on her Twitter. My favorite of hers was, ”Why would I want the govt involved in my love life? Ew. It’s barbaric.” I hear you, Sarah.

Jon Hamm

Jon Hamm has been dating his girlfriend, Jennifer Westfeldt, for 16 years but he is clearly not looking to ever get married. He shared with Playboy Magazine in 2012, “I don’t have a particularly defined example of marriage in my life.” He added, ”My parents got divorced when I was two and never remarried. So it doesn’t mean anything to me. I don’t mean to say that it shouldn’t mean things to other people. I’m not judging it one way or another.”

Evangeline Lilly

Evangeline Lilly has a 3 year old son with her partner Norman Kali, but she tells Ocean Drive Magazine that marriage isn’t “realistic.” She adds, “…Emotionally neither of us really feels the need for it. We love each other today, and we hope we’ll love each other tomorrow. In my world, I don’t believe in forever promises. I don’t think it’s realistic.”

Scott Disick

It’s no secret that Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick have a very, um, interesting relationship, and after so many years and three children together, they clearly still has no intentions on marriage. Last year he told Ryan Seacrest, “I think if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. You know what I mean? I would say we’re decently happy. I feel like I used to want to get married more than she did, and then, being that she was always so not interested, I’ve decided not to be.”

Cameron Diaz

Okay, so seems like Diaz might be the ones that has changed her tune, since she’s recently been spotted sporting an engagement ring from Benji Madden. She’s been one of the most vocal speakers against marriage and/or monogamy, like the time she told Maxim that she felt marriage was a dying institution. She said, ”I think we have to make our own rules. I don’t think we should live our lives in relationships based off of old traditions that don’t suit our world any longer.”

Diane Keaton

I like to think Diane Keaton is my single girl spirit animal, and she has had some pretty epic love affairs throughout the years (Warren Beatty, Al Pacino,) but she asserts that she could never fully give up her own life for another. She tells More.com: “I’m attracted to men, and I love playing around with them. But a life shared together? That’s a different world. I think you have to be somebody who can compromise and be realistic. I could never do it. Ever.”

Oprah

Oprah Winfrey has been in a relationship with Stedman Graham since 1986 and they have remained unmarried, not that it bothers he at all. Last year she told ITV’s Lorrain Kelly in an interview, “I’m not a traditional woman and I haven’t had a traditional life, and I think that had Stedman and I gotten married, we certainly wouldn’t have stayed married. I’ve taught him to be non-traditional. But the very idea of what it means to be a wife and the responsibility and sacrifice that carries — I wouldn’t have held that very well.”

Charlize Theron

It’s known that Charlize Theron comes from a very troubled background with her parents, and she has hinted that her past could have had a tiny influence on her belief of marriage. On Piers Morgan Tonight in 2012, Theron shared that “I’ll be the first to say, here on your show, marriage—before I felt this way about this issue—was never something that was important to me. I don’t know the exact reason for that. I really want for myself a long-term relationship,” she continues, “and I have been in long-term relationships…That’s the kind of union that I want. The actual ceremony is not something that is important to me—but I see the importance for other people.”

Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais is one of the celebs most opposed to the idea of marriage, and is very happy with his partner of over 30 years(!!) Jane Fallon. He told David Letterman, “I don’t think there’s any point to us getting married…We don’t want any more toasters, we never want our families to meet, that would be terrible.” I’m sure he says that in jest but it’s safe to say there will be no ceremony in the near future.

Goldie Hawn

Goldie hawn has famously been with Kurt Russell for over 30 years, and they are just happy without the ceremony of marriage. She told CBS This Morning, “The question is, ‘Why (get married)?’ it’s not, ‘Why not?’ We’re in love. I wake up every morning. I love being with him. He brings me coffee. I give him a kiss. It’s ‘good morning.’ We love each other. We fight the way people are supposed to fight. We love our lives together.”

Sheryl Crow

Sheryl Crow has had some pretty high-profile romances in the past, says that many times they have lead to her “feeling small.” She shared with E! Online, “I don’t think marriage is the be-all and end-all…It’s better to have three broken engagements than three divorces.” She adds,”I had always gone out with guys who were highly successful, which would seem like it would put me at an equal level, but what ends up happening is that one of you becomes smaller — and it was always me.”

Lauren Graham

In March of this year, Graham appeared on The Ellen Show, where she was asked whether her and Parenthood co-star and boyfriend, Peter Krause, would ever get married. “I don’t know. We are very happy as we are and I never have a good question for this answer,” she said. “I feel like close to five years in Hollywood, its like, aren’t we married already really? It’s good the way it is.”

Diane Kruger

Diane Kruger was previously married to French actor Guillame Canet and Kruger says she will never marry again, even though she’s been in the most perfect relationship with Joshua Jackson for over eight years. She told Glamour Magazine in 2011, “Without sounding pessimistic, I learned that I don’t believe in marriage. I believe in a commitment that you make in your heart. There’s no paper that will make you stay.”
