'Maleficent' Beat the Blockbusters at the PCAs

by Nicole Pomarico

The good news: It's finally awards season, and we're starting off with the People's Choice Awards. The bad news? The PCAs are fan-voted, so if your favorites lose, you only have yourself to blame. Although the fun part of the PCAs is the fact that they offer so many categories that other awards shows don't, the big, important award of the night remains the same: Best Movie. This year's nominees aren't too surprising: 22 Jump Street, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Maleficent, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. My fingers are crossed for 22 Jump Street, as I would gladly watch Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill play buddy cops for the rest of my life, if that was possible. But it's all up to how the fans voted, and now they have spoken. The winner of the People's Choice Award for Favorite Movie is Maleficent.

Unfortunately, we didn't get to see Angelina Jolie come on stage and accept the award for two reasons: Angelina Jolie wasn't even there, and the People's Choice Awards broadcast cut off before Favorite Movie was announced. Boo! But as much as I was rooting for 22 Jump Street, I'm glad that Maleficent is taking this one, if not a little surprised. It was up against so many action blockbusters, which tend to win at shows like this one. I guess it just goes to show the power of Disney, right? Or maybe the power of badass women.

I hope Jolie is somewhere celebrating her reward for sporting those horrendously heavy horns while filming the movie. Maleficent, while no Captain America, was a pretty magical retelling of a classic fairytale — and Jolie was the perfect person for the role. Congratulations, Jolie!
